Scouting for Food

2012 Scouting for Food

What?  Scouting for Food is an annual service project sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, Golden Spread Council.

Who?   All Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and their units participate in Scouting for Food.  All Scouts are encouraged to participate in the “Good Turn” event to help the less fortunate members of our communities.

Where?   All 27 Counties that the Council serves!  The food we collect will go to the Food Bank and Food Pantries across our area serving hungry people.  Food collected in the Amarillo area will be brought to the High Plains Food Bank between the hours of 9am to 12:30pm.  All other areas will have their own drop off points.  Your District leaders will let you know where you should bring your food collected.

When?  March 24th, 2012.  We suggest you collect non-perishable food items from your chosen neighborhood between the hours of 9am to 12:30pm.  We want to increase our food collections this year so it’s important you participate.  Collection bags will be available at your Roundtable in March for pickup by unit leaders.  Please make sure someone attends from your unit.  We will also have Activity Workbooks for leaders to use at meetings to help Scouts understand the hunger problems in our areas.  Please click on the applicable link at the bottom of the page.

How?   There are many ways to help collect the most food items possible.  Besides going door to door on March 24th, you can start collecting food in the following ways:

  1. Collect from family, friends and immediate neighbors.
  2. You might talk to the school principal and see if you can put a box in the school lobby to collect food from parents and students.
  3. Talk to your local church leaders to place a box in the lobby of the church and mention Scouting for Food on Sunday during services.
  4. Ask the local food store if you can place a few boxes to collect food.  Many folks will donate a few extra cans of food on their way out of the store!
